Cities are quite often photographed in black and white. At least, my favorite shots are. I think it has to do with the fact that the lack of colors helps ensure that what you're focusing on are the shapes of the buildings, the griminess of the streets, and the absent-minded pedestrians making their way to their cubicles and to the train stations.
